Space-based action game

Unfortunate Spacemen is a co-op/multiplayer action game developed by Geoff Keene and published by New Blood Interactive. It is a shape-shifting space game wherein you will play a hapless yet brave spaceman who is given the task to defend falling outposts. However, not everyone on the crew is who they claim to be. A traitor is out there working to ensure that you and everyone in space will not be rescued alive.

Among Us with guns

Like the popular game, Among Us, the Unfortunate Spacemen is all about deception and trust. You and your crew are in failing space outposts waiting for rescue. You need to work together to complete random objectives. However, someone in the game is not on your side. One of your fellow astronauts is a shapeshifting alien trying to stop the rescue mission. However, unlike Among Us, you and the monster are armed with guns, taking the combat to the next level.

If you choose to play the spaceman, you need to complete the randomized objectives or hunt the monster. If you are the monster, you need to mimic and devour all the spacemen. You need to lay traps or take them head-on in your monster form. The main shapeshifter mode supports up to 16 players, with 15 maps spread across space. Alternatively, you can play the 5-player co-op story mode and the 10-player survival mode against waves of enemies.

By completing levels, you can rank up through The Company, which lets you unlock new customizations and perks that you can tailor to suit your play style. However, if you are going into this game, looking for an action-packed game, you will be disappointed. Some of the jobs are too boring while some are near impossible to do. More than that, some sabotages work out to be clanky, obvious, and ineffective.

Your usual asymmetrical multiplayer game

The Unfortunate Spacemen is a great game to play if you are into an asymmetrical multiplayer game. The game is easy to follow and comes with an in-game communication feature to help you communicate and work with your crew better. However, as is the case with games of this genre, players tend to have short lives. More than that, some features need improvement in order to offer players a better experience.

PROS

  • Easy-to-follow mechanics
  • Three available game modes
  • Main campaign supports up to 16 players
  • In-game communication feature

CONS

  • Some objectives are boring
  • Some tasks are near-impossible to complete
  • Monster traps are sometimes obvious and ineffective
